Member Spotlight: Don and Donna Wright of Wright’s Hallmark - Lisa Salazar
Celebrating 49 years of marriage this October, Don and Donna Wright of Wright’s Hallmark have run a successful business for more than a quarter of a century. As owners of the card and gift store located in the Visalia Mall, the Wrights have been there at holidays, special occasions, important milestones and unexpected occasions when you want to share a laugh or offer comfort.
While there is no surefire formula for success, the Wrights have certainly proven they have what it takes to keep shoppers coming back. Contrary to reports published elsewhere, Wrights Hallmark in the Visalia Mall is still in business and not going anywhere anytime soon. When the lease on their Mary’s Vineyard location ended in January, they saw it as an opportunity to simplify their lives and chose not to renew the lease. “The timing was right and it just made sense,” Don explains.
She is the buyer/merchandiser and he is the financial specialist of the business. They make a good team and enjoy working together. “Donna does an excellent job buying what seems to sell in this area. She has a good rapport with the people we buy from and they work together to establish what will work in the store,” explains Don. The Wrights work hard to offer customers what they want and what the market demands. “We get to visit with the customers, so we know what they want and are able to offer personal service and products based on their preferences,” explains Donna.
It’s this kind of personal service that sets the Wrights apart from their competitors. “It’s fun to interact with the customers and pick up on trends in the marketplace,” explains Don. You never know when the next pet rock, beanie baby, or Italian charm is going to come along. The nature of their business is occasion-driven, yet there is always some hot item customers are looking to buy such as the initialized notepads, garden flags, and wine glasses in the store now. May and June are very busy with Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and graduations.
The Wrights are part of the Hallmark Gold Crown® network and have met specific standards and criteria in order to receive this designation. What customers may not realize is that Hallmark offers one of the longest-running consumer loyalty programs in the U.S. “There are perks to being a Gold Crown® customer and anyone can sign up for the program free of charge. You can’t get those rewards at other retailers,” Donna says. Customers get points that can be redeemed for store credit when using a Gold Crown® card, so it definitely pays to buy local and shop at Wright’s Hallmark.
Most recently, Don has become involved in the Chamber’s Coffee Klatch committee which focuses on retail business along Mooney Boulevard. Don believes Mooney businesses must work together and pay attention to what is happening at the city and state level. “Don’t complain if you don’t like what is happening - businesses on the boulevard need to participate and be vocal - and the Coffee Klatch allows this to happen,” he says. Don has been instrumental in bringing neighboring Mooney retailers to the monthly meetings and looks forward to helping develop a merchant association for Mooney businesses.
