On December 31, 2009, thirty-three employees of the McDermont Field House and Sports Center in Lindsay were laid off.  The City of Lindsay, which owns McDermont Field House, is using an innovative way to utilize grant funds received by a city grant. All employees laid off are being given the opportunity to start their own business at McDermont Field House.

On Tuesday, June 2nd, Lynn Jacobs, Director of the California Department of Housing and Community Development, came to Visalia to speak to local government officials and business representatives from throughout the San Joaquin Valley.  Jacobs’ keynote speech was part of an all-day funding and technical assistance forum held at the Visalia Convention Center.  Nicole Parra with the State of California’s Business, Transportation and Housing agency and Mike Lane with Self-Help Enterprises were co-chairs for the event.
